Rim-tempering:  This is not "just a feature".  A rim can chip if it is not reinforced or has unbalanced tension-compression ratios. Using mechanical heat-and-cold tempering, these glasses have hidden safety built in. We know paper cups from a coffee shop need plastic lids to support shape of the cup. Our glasses have tempered rims to do a similar job, and especially because there is greater impact around the rim during stacking

Form & Style:  The lower part is contoured for better grip. It also creates an air-gap with the glass into which it is stacked. That prevents glasses from sticking to each other if they are damp or wet.  We all know what happens when we pick up glasses stuck to each other. Ridges add strength to the glass on the inner side, and to aid separation, while they make the glasses more interesting when you pour carbonated drinks. Colored tumblers or clear - your choice
