The Tripod: Why, What, and How Method

The Tripod: Why, What, and How Method

The Constant and the Crafted: Why We Travel

At the core of humanity, the story remains remarkably consistent. To rest we sit down, we still gather to converse, and we still reach for a cloth to dry our hands or tend to our homes.

While the how of these actions evolves from sitting on rocks > to ergonomic chairs, or from fireside gatherings > to digital screens, the fundamental what remains anchored in our biology

At Hem & Tassel, our collection is supported by three distinct points of inquiry. We believe that for an object to be truly exceptional, it must stand firmly upon a tripod of purpose: the historical What, the evolutionary How, and the global Why.

When we travel, we aren't just looking for inventory - we are looking for stability of that triad

At Hem & Tassel, this is where the journey begins. We believe that deep, artisanal tradition shouldn't be a relic of the past, but the very lifeblood of modern manufacturing. To find the intersection where ancient mastery meets contemporary precision, we have to go to the source

True excellence is rarely found around the corner. It is inveitably a product of lineage and environment

Consider the Italian masters of five centuries ago. A sculptor’s hands required more than just a dream; they required an intimate literacy in marble, mastery of specialized tools, and a profound grasp of human proportion. They sketched from life, conferred in guilds, and debated with quarriers to ensure the stone would hold its form. Today, while technology grants scientific precision, that same foundational soul must be present

We travel to ensure our products have that soul

Our family history with textiles reminds us that each weave was born out of the culture that produced it.  Each weave has a story that needs to be respected. Stuff like how Damask came from ancient Damascus, or Denim was the fabric of [de]Nimes, and Jacquard was woven on a computational machine in way back in 1804.  We find the "what" and learn its "how" and that is "why" we take pains to learn about it all

In Japan, for instance, one might marvel at the systemic discipline of their woodwork—the complex joinery engineered to withstand seismic shocks

When we later quiz the Japanese producer, we can grasp how they apply that same rigorous science to reinforcing the delicate rim of a glass tumbler. We aren't surprised. We are inspired. We recognize the same fingerprint of discipline, whether it’s in a temple beam or a beer glass. We accept the vendor as one whose products will fit in with our own

This is the essence of our process. The what is a curated collection of simple daily-use objects; the how is our relentless pursuit of quality. And the why? That is why we travel—to bring the world’s simple perfections to your home
